Why Your Gut Might Be Behind Your Fatigue

Persistent tiredness is rarely a single-cause problem. When conventional bloodwork comes back normal, the digestive system is often where the pattern becomes visible.

Fatigue is one of the most common reasons patients come to the clinic, and one of the least satisfying complaints to bring to a ten-minute appointment. Blood counts, thyroid values and iron levels come back within range, and the conclusion is that nothing is wrong. What that usually means is that nothing measured is wrong.

In an integrative intake, fatigue is treated as a downstream symptom. The question is not whether you are tired, but which system is spending more energy than it should. In a large share of cases, that system is digestion.

Digestion is expensive

Breaking down food, absorbing nutrients and maintaining the intestinal barrier all require energy and raw material. When digestion is inefficient, two things happen at once: the body spends more to process the same meal, and it recovers less from it. Over months, that gap shows up as tiredness that sleep does not resolve.

This is also why fatigue so often travels with bloating, irregular stools, reflux or food reactions that seem to come and go. They are not separate complaints; they are the same process observed from different angles.

“

Normal bloodwork rules out disease. It does not tell you how well a system is functioning.

Three patterns I see most often

The same symptom set points to different mechanisms, and distinguishing between them decides the treatment. These are the three that come up most in practice.

01

Low stomach acid

Often mistaken for its opposite. Protein sits heavily, iron and B12 absorb poorly, and the fatigue has a distinctly post-meal character.

02

Disturbed intestinal flora

Frequently following antibiotics, a period of high stress or a long stretch of irregular eating. Bloating and mood changes tend to appear together here.

03

Low-grade inflammation

Below the threshold of standard markers but enough to keep the immune system engaged, which is metabolically costly over time.

What an intake looks at

During an intake consult, the body is examined by measuring the hands and feet with Electro Physiological Diagnostics, assessing the pulse and evaluating the tongue. Alongside a full review of history, nutrition and lifestyle, this builds a functional picture rather than a static snapshot, which is what makes it possible to see which of the three patterns above is dominant.

From there the plan is specific: targeted nutritional support, adjustments to meal structure, and where appropriate homeopathic or TCM-based support. Progress is measured at the follow-up against your own intake results, not against a standard protocol, so the plan can be refined based on what your body actually responded to.

If you recognise this pattern, an intake consult is the place to start. It is also worth saying plainly: integrative care works alongside your huisarts, not instead of it. Persistent fatigue should always be checked medically first.
